Artist Statement

My work examines the culture of my hometown in Northern Michigan. Through this examination, I am exploring my own relationship to this culture, as I am not completely native, nor am I an outsider. My particular interests are in the formal qualities of the objects that are used and created by the members of this community. The vehicles, hobbies, garments, and decorations are an extension of the individuals. Customization plays an even more important role in forming the cultural identity. Many of these qualities are not unique to my hometown, and can be found in many Midwestern and rural communities. My hope is to clarify the unique quality that is specific only to East Tawas, Michigan.
